Hi all – As provisional, overseas, and absentee ballots continue to be counted, Democrats continue to rack up key down-ballot wins. This cycle, Republicans up and down the ballot had some of the smallest victories ever recorded, and at the national level, the numbers are clear that Trump’s election is far from a mandate.
We’re sharing a few late-breaking nuggets on data and races that you might have missed over the last couple of weeks.
- Presidential: As more votes continue to come in, Trump is now under 50% of the popular vote. His margin ranks 44th out of 51 elections since 1824.
- This margin is smaller than Joe Biden’s victory in 2020 and Hillary Clinton’s popular vote victory in 2016.
- This is the narrowest margin for a Republican since 1968, excluding the two times Republicans lost the popular vote and won the Electoral College.
- This margin is smaller than Joe Biden’s victory in 2020 and Hillary Clinton’s popular vote victory in 2016.
- Senate: In the Senate, Democrats claimed victories in four states that Trump won – the most Senate races that the presidential winner’s party lost in states where the presidential candidate won since 2004.
- House: Republicans’ House majority is the narrowest either party has claimed in nearly 100 years. Meanwhile, states across the country continue to count ballots in highly competitive House elections. Following election night, many of these ballots have broken in favor of Democrats – unseating Republican incumbents and winning districts that Trump carried.
- State Legislature: Across the country, Democrats held the line and even made gains against Republicans in state legislative elections. Democrats in Montana broke a 30-year record this year, clinching 10 seats in the state House and 2 seats in the state Senate – breaking the GOP supermajority.
- State Supreme Court: Democrats held the line in state Supreme Court races, poised to win a tough race in North Carolina, winning a tough race in Kentucky, and expanding the majority on the court in Michigan. This follows crucial victories for Democrats in Wisconsin and Pennsylvania in 2023.
